The four bonus tracks consist of three pieces by Pieranunzi inspired by Fellini and Rota’s music, plus a new version of “La dolce vita” all recorded in October 2012. Twelve years ago, “Fellini Jazz” appeared as a real event: it had been a long time since three international jazz masters such as Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian, plus the younger sax wizard Chris Potter had teamed up on a record. Enrico Pieranunzi was able to get them all for this special project around the dream world of Fellini and Rota. The Roman pianist wrote some amusing liner notes revealing how amazed he was in such great company: “Motian, Haden, Wheeler, Potter, such a group can only exist in the imagination of a daring producer or in dreams. Ira Glitter’s remarks should also be quoted: “Pieranunzi brings forth a similarity between the way in which jazz players play and directors like Fellini shape their films: «They both aim at looking beyond, all the time, in search of what lies beneath the surface of things. It’s an endless, strenuous effort to express the mysterious and hidden areas of ourselves, where the roots of the subconscious of the human condition lie». “These players were the best actors for such a challenging music film”.
